本次讲座中，上海美国中心邀请到了华裔美国作家谢汉兰（Helen Zia），她会讨论她的新书《离开上海的最后一艘船》中的一些话题，该书的主角是一些1940年代末为躲避战乱而离开上海的人， 他们的奋斗故事也道出了如今世界各地的移民者面临的一些共同难题。七十年后的今天，能完整回忆起当年动荡的这代人中的四位向谢汉兰分享了他们的经历。

The Shanghai American Center invites you to an evening lecture with Asian-American author and journalist Helen Zia. During the talk, she will discuss aspects of her recent book Last Boat out of Shanghai. Last Boat is based on the dramatic, real-life stories of everyday people caught up the mass exodus of Shanghai in late 1940s — a heartrending precursor to the struggles faced by emigrants from all across the globe today. Seventy years later, the last generation to fully recall one of the most tumultuous events of the twentieth century have shared their stories with Helen Zia, who has deftly weaved them together to bring to life the story of four young Shanghai residents. 

谢汉兰来自一个美国华裔移民家庭，她曾在多个场合为民权与和平、妇女权利、反仇恨暴力和恐同等主题活动发出声音。她的努力被记录在了奥斯卡提名纪录片《谁杀了陈果仁》中，比尔·莫耶斯在美国公共电视台PBS的纪录片《成为美国人：华人的经历》中也对她进行了介绍。她曾担任2008年北京奥运会的旧金山站火炬手。

Helen Zia, the daughter of immigrants from China, has been outspoken on issues ranging from human rights and peace to women’s rights and countering hate violence and homophobia. She is featured in the Academy Award nominated documentary Who Killed Vincent Chin? and was profiled in Bill Moyers’ PBS series Becoming American: The Chinese Experience. In 2008 Helen was a Torchbearer in San Francisco for the Beijing Olympics.
